The work presented here features paintings of Mark Elbertus.

He obtained his Bachelor in Visual Art and his Master in Sociology. During these studies he focused on painting, graphic- and product design, the social and physical aspects of urban development, social inequality, power relations and cultural classifications.

The material used in this work consists of oil paint, sand and charcoal. The process by-which the oil paint is repeatedly put on / cut off canvas makes the paintings highly layered and textural. The compositions consists of oppositional visual elements: bright VS dark | black VS white | shiny VS mat | horizontal VS vertical | spatial VS dens | order VS chaos | texture VS smooth.
